Argan oil for your hair

Argan oil has been used for centuries as a hair conditioner, helping to treat split ends and keep frizzy hair in check. Here is how to use it, from a few drops on damp ends to an overnight treatment.

Why your hair loves it

Argan oil contains essential fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins E and A and minerals which your hair will love. The vitamin E rich oil soaks into the hair fibre, providing it with essential nutrients for protection and long-lasting shine.

For healthy hair, it is important to keep it moisturised, especially if your hair is dry or brittle. With all the natural goodness argan oil contains, such as vitamin E and fatty acids, you are feeding your hair with the nutrients it needs.

In Morocco, women apply argan oil to their hair before a hammam (steam bath), so that it can really soak in and improve the hair’s silkiness.

Tame frizz and detangle

Argan oil is fantastic for detangling and taming frizzy hair. Packed with nourishing vitamins, it makes your hair more manageable, leaving it soft and smooth.

  • Apply a few drops of argan oil to damp hair.
  • Pay special attention to the ends of the hair.

A finishing touch for shine

Argan oil is also great for the finishing touches to your hair, leaving it looking shiny and well nourished. Apply a few drops to your hands, rub them together and apply to dry hair. This will make it look shinier and more lustrous.

It works as a styling agent too, when you need to tame frizzy hair or add some gloss. Since our argan oil is pure and enriched with nutrients such as vitamin E, it is a great natural product to use on your hair before applying heat. To use before or after styling, rub one to two drops into your palms and apply to your hair, adding more according to your hair’s volume.

A scalp massage treatment

  1. Apply a small amount of the oil to your hair and massage your scalp in a circular motion.
  2. Leave the treatment in your hair for an hour, then wash it out with a mild shampoo.
  3. For damaged hair, leave the treatment in overnight.

Overnight deep conditioning

Argan oil can be used as an overnight deep-conditioning treatment.

  1. Warm approximately 5 drops in your hands and start to massage your scalp gently, giving special attention to the ends.
  2. Put on a shower cap. It keeps your hair in one place and makes sure the oil fully penetrates your hair.
  3. In the morning, wash your hair using your regular shampoo and rinse until the oil is removed.

Three recipes from our journal

Argan and rosemary

Rosemary has been used for centuries as a hair treatment, and it contains a significant amount of antioxidants. Teamed with argan oil, it becomes a powerful hair treatment for a daily scalp massage: add 3–4 drops of rosemary oil to one tablespoon of warmed Kenzul Atlas Argan Oil, rub into the scalp for a few minutes and leave for at least 30 minutes.

Argan and aloe vera

For super soft, nourished hair, try combining argan oil and aloe vera. Aloe vera is widely known to be good for your hair and skin, and together with argan oil it makes an effective treatment that leaves your hair soft and shiny. You will need argan oil and pure aloe vera gel (from a health store).

  1. Put eight tablespoons of aloe vera gel in a bowl, add two to three drops of argan oil and gently mix together.
  2. Apply to your hair and massage gently into your scalp. Keep it in your hair for an hour, or overnight for a deep treatment.
  3. Wash your hair in your usual way, and see how soft and shiny it is.

This natural treatment can be stored in an airtight bottle in the fridge for a week, and used about three times a week as part of your hair care routine.

Argan and onion

One of our very first journal entries tried an old home remedy. The paste of one onion was diluted with two parts water, and a tablespoon of argan oil was added. The mixture went onto the hair, which was wrapped in plastic film with a towel over the top to mimic the warmth of the hammam. After thirty minutes, the hair was rinsed with cool water and then with a rinse of 50% water and 50% apple cider vinegar, which completely removes any onion smell.

After just one application I could immediately see that my hair was more shiny, supple and soft.

Pure argan oil or Moroccanoil®?

A question that we often get asked is whether Moroccanoil® and argan oil are the same thing. The Moroccanoil® Treatment contains argan oil, but it is also infused with other ingredients, such as silicones, and is intended for hair styling and conditioning.

Pure argan oil, such as Kenzul Atlas Argan Oil, is 100% pure, rich in vitamin A and vitamin E and packed with antioxidants and fatty acids. It is pure enough to condition your skin, nails and hair.

For beards, too

Argan oil for beard care provides two important benefits: it adds shine and softness to your beard while moisturising the skin beneath. It acts as a natural brilliantine, giving a soft sheen without the heavy, greasy build-up that other oils and waxes produce, and it softens the hair, which makes a beard easier to style and manage. Because it moisturises the skin under the beard, it also helps prevent dryness and flaking.

  • For daily care, apply a few drops to the palms of your hands, rub them together to generate some warmth, and massage into your beard.
  • For an intensive treatment, warm a teaspoon of argan oil and massage it into your beard as a mask. Leave it for an hour, then wash out as usual.
